What should a flores car hire budget actually include?
Almost every quote we issue is built from four components: the vehicle class, the number of chargeable days, the operating radius (town-only versus overland), and any repositioning the vehicle has to do after you step out. Everything else — the chauffeur, fuel for the agreed itinerary, parking, and standard road tolls where they exist — is already priced in. That is the single biggest difference between a chauffeured quote in Flores and the self-drive maths people bring with them from Europe or Australia, where fuel and parking are separate lines that quietly add 20–30 percent.

How does a 3-day town base compare with a 5-day traverse?
This is where most budgets go wrong, because people assume the difference is simply two extra days. It is not — the two trips use different vehicles, different daily hours and different cost structures.
Three-day town base. You stay in Labuan Bajo, sail one day, and use the vehicle for airport pickup at Komodo Airport (LBJ), harbour transfers, a Rinca-side viewpoint run and dinner movements. A premium MPV at, say, USD 95 per day gives you roughly USD 285 for the vehicle across three days. Add a modest allowance for extra evening hours and you are budgeting around USD 300–330 total. Per couple, that is roughly USD 50 a day each — less than most people spend on two airport taxis in a European capital.
Five-day traverse. You move west to east — Labuan Bajo through Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende and the Kelimutu crater lakes, finishing near Maumere. The vehicle is now an SUV or HiAce, days run long, the road profile is mountainous, and the car has to come home empty afterwards. At USD 150 per day for an SUV, that is USD 750 for five days, plus a one-way drop line. Realistically you are budgeting USD 900–1,050 for the vehicle side of the trip. Split between four travellers, the vehicle cost is around USD 45–55 per person per day, including a professional driver who knows which stretches of the Trans-Flores road are worth attacking before 9am.
The pattern is consistent: a flores car hire budget scales with route difficulty far more than with day count. Two extra days on a town base adds very little. Two extra days that convert a town base into a traverse changes the vehicle class, the daily rate and the repositioning cost all at once. If a traverse is what you actually want, it is usually cheaper to price it as a package from the start — that is what the Flores overland package exists for.
What do multi-day and one-way drop do to the number?
Two adjustments move in opposite directions, and both belong in your spreadsheet.
- Multi-day commitment pulls the rate down. A vehicle booked for a single day carries the full cost of dispatching it. Once it is committed to you for three days or more, the effective daily rate typically softens; beyond five days the softening is more noticeable. Ask for the multi-day figure explicitly rather than multiplying the one-day rate — the arithmetic is not linear.
- One-way drop pushes the total up. If you finish in Ende, Maumere or anywhere the vehicle is not based, the car and driver still have to return. That deadhead leg is real fuel, real hours and usually a night on the road. Depending on distance and vehicle class, expect a one-way line somewhere in the region of USD 90–220. It is disclosed as its own item on our quotes, never buried in the daily rate.
A useful rule of thumb: the multi-day softening on a five-day booking often absorbs a large part of a moderate drop fee, which is why a long traverse can end up costing less per day than three disconnected single-day hires.
Are fuel, parking and the driver really inside the quote?
Yes. Chauffeur service is the norm across Flores, not an upsell — the roads reward local knowledge, and self-drive is not how this island is sensibly travelled by visitors. Fuel for the agreed itinerary, the driver’s fee, parking, and standard tolls are all inside the per-day figure. On overnight overland routes the driver’s meals and accommodation are folded in as well; you should not be handed a separate bill for them at a guesthouse in Bajawa.
What sits outside the quote is straightforward and short: national park and site entrance tickets, any inter-island ferry passage, meals for your own party, and hours beyond the agreed operating day (billed at a modest hourly rate). Nothing else should appear.
Where do EVs fit in a flores car hire budget?
Electric vehicles are the newest line in our fleet and the one that needs the most honesty. As of 2026, charging infrastructure outside Labuan Bajo is thin. We therefore treat our EVs — the compact Air EV class and the bZ4X-class SUV — as town and near-town vehicles only. They are excellent for harbour transfers, hotel movements, quiet executive arrivals and short scenic loops within confident range of a charge point.
They are not the right tool for a Kelimutu traverse, and we will say so before you book rather than after. If your itinerary mixes both — two days in town, then three days east — the sensible structure is an EV for the town segment and a diesel SUV for the overland segment, quoted as one booking. That combination usually lands within a few dollars a day of an all-SUV budget, so choosing the EV where it genuinely works costs you almost nothing.
The buffer line most travellers forget
Add 10–15 percent on top of your vehicle subtotal. Not because quotes drift — they do not — but because Flores itineraries move. A ferry runs late, a village ceremony closes a road, a sunrise attempt at Kelimutu turns into a second attempt the next morning, or dinner runs three hours past the agreed day. Those are extra-hour and extra-day events, and they are the only realistic way a flores car hire budget ends up higher than planned.
One more seasonal note worth writing down: between June and September the available fleet across Flores is genuinely limited, and premium SUVs and HiAce units are committed weeks ahead. Late booking in that window does not usually mean a higher price — it means no vehicle in the class you wanted.
