A half-day block is typically 6 hours from pickup, a full-day block is typically 12 hours. Both include a chauffeur — self-drive is not the norm in this region and we do not offer it. The clock starts at your stated pickup time, not when you actually get in the car, so a late start eats into your own window rather than extending it.
The practical difference is not really hours, it is terrain. Labuan Bajo town is compact — you can cross it in fifteen minutes. But the roads out toward Mbeliling, Melo and Cunca Wulang climb, narrow, and slow down considerably. A destination that looks like “40 minutes away” on a map behaves like ninety minutes in real driving conditions once you factor in road surface, motorbike traffic and the time you will actually want to spend at the site.
What fits into a 6-hour half-day block?
A half day works well when your itinerary stays within the Labuan Bajo basin. Realistic combinations that fit without rushing:
- Batu Cermin Cave plus a hilltop viewpoint plus a late lunch in town. Batu Cermin sits close to town; the cave visit itself is short, and the surrounding walk adds maybe an hour.
- Airport pickup, hotel check-in, then a sunset viewpoint run. This is the single most common half-day pattern for arrivals into Komodo Airport (LBJ), particularly for guests boarding a boat the next morning.
- Town errands day. Dive shop, pharmacy, SIM card, provisioning for a liveaboard, a few cafés. Sounds mundane, but with a chauffeur waiting it turns four separate stressful stops into one relaxed loop.
- Harbour area plus Bukit Cinta or a similar ridge viewpoint at golden hour.
What does not fit into six hours: Cunca Wulang waterfall (the trek alone consumes a large part of the day), Rangko Cave (boat transfer required at the far end of a road journey), or any combination of two out-of-town sites. People try. It rarely ends on time.

- Rangko Cave with the boat leg included. The road journey ends at a small jetty and the final approach is by local boat, which introduces waiting time entirely outside the driver’s control — tides and boat availability set the pace, not the schedule.
- Full arrival day: airport, hotel, out-of-town site, dinner, hotel. Popular for guests with only one land day before or after a Komodo cruise.

How are waiting time and overtime handled?
Waiting time inside your booked block is free. If you booked twelve hours and spend three of them at a waterfall while the driver waits at the trailhead, that is simply how the block is used — nobody is billing you extra for standing still.
Overtime is different. It begins when you pass the end of the booked block, and it is charged in hourly increments. As of 2026 our practice is straightforward:
- Overtime is billed per hour started, at a rate confirmed in your original quote — so you know the number before the day begins, not after.
- The driver will flag the approaching end of the block roughly an hour ahead. This is a courtesy, not a pressure tactic; it exists so you can decide consciously rather than discover the charge later.
- Extending on the day is normally possible, but it is not guaranteed — drivers have next-day starts and, during peak season, the same vehicle may already be committed.
Here is the honest part most operators leave out: upgrading from a half day to a full day at the point of booking is almost always cheaper than paying six hours of overtime on a half-day block. EVs are excellent for half-day town work. Airport transfers, harbour runs, hotel-to-restaurant, Batu Cermin, in-town viewpoints. Quiet, smooth, no fumes while idling in the heat — which matters more than people expect when the car is waiting with the air conditioning running.
EVs are not the right tool for full-day highland routes. Charging infrastructure across Flores remains thin as of 2026, and the climbs toward Melo and Cunca Wulang consume range faster than flat driving.
