Labuan Bajo to Maumere Overland | Komodo Car Hire

Labuan Bajo to Maumere is the full trans-Flores traverse — roughly 650–700 km of mountain highway from the western tip of Flores to its eastern port city, normally driven over 5–7 days with a private car and driver. Komodo Car Hire arranges it as a one-way overland charter that finishes at Frans Seda Airport (MOF) in Maumere, so you fly out east instead of backtracking to Komodo Airport. Pricing is quote-based in USD because the total depends on vehicle class, number of days, and repositioning the car back west afterwards.

What does the Labuan Bajo to Maumere overland service include?

This is a chartered vehicle with an English-speaking Flores driver — not a self-drive rental and not a seat on a shared bus. A standard booking covers:

  • One private vehicle for the entire route, typically a 7-seat MPV, a high-clearance SUV, or a 10–16 seat minibus for families and small groups.
  • Driver, fuel, tolls and parking for the agreed itinerary, plus the driver’s own meals and accommodation along the way.
  • Stage-by-stage planning — where to break the drive, which viewpoints justify a stop, and realistic departure times for a Kelimutu sunrise.
  • Airport handoff in Maumere, with buffer time built in around the limited daily departures from MOF.
  • One-way handling — vehicle and driver return west afterwards, which is why one-way pricing sits above a simple day charter.

Hotels, meals, national park and crater entrance fees, village donations and your onward flight are quoted separately or booked by you. We keep those unbundled so the transport cost is visible rather than hidden inside a package number.

How long does the drive from Labuan Bajo to Maumere take?

In theory it is a two-day push. In practice almost nobody enjoys that. The Trans-Flores highway is sealed along most of its length but relentlessly winding, climbing over several mountain ranges, and real average speeds sit far below what the raw distance suggests. As of 2026 we plan the traverse in these stages:

Stage Approx. distance Typical driving time
Labuan Bajo → Ruteng ~135 km 4–5 hours
Ruteng → Bajawa ~130 km 4–5 hours
Bajawa → Ende ~125 km 4–5 hours
Ende → Moni (Kelimutu) ~50 km 1.5–2 hours
Moni → Maumere ~95 km 2.5–3 hours

Five days is the comfortable minimum. Six or seven days lets you add the Riung 17 Islands detour, the Ngada villages of Bena and Luba, the hot springs near Bajawa, and the ikat weaving villages inland from Maumere without spending every daylight hour behind glass. Surface conditions shift with the rainy season, so we re-check each stage before issuing a quote.

Can the trans-Flores traverse be done in an electric vehicle?

Honest answer: not yet on this route, and we would rather say so than sell you a problem. Public charging along the corridor through Ruteng, Bajawa and Ende remains minimal as of 2026, and the sustained climbs punish range hard. For the long traverse we use conventional or hybrid vehicles that refuel anywhere. Where electric genuinely works is short-radius driving around Labuan Bajo — harbour runs, Batu Cermin, Melo village, town errands — and that is where our EV car hire fleet is deployed. Plenty of guests combine both: electric for the days based in town, a hybrid or diesel SUV for the eastbound run.

How do you book the one-way overland charter?

The process is deliberately conversational, because a route this long is not a dropdown menu.

  • Send your dates on WhatsApp with group size, luggage volume, and the flight you intend to catch out of Maumere.
  • We propose a stage plan — usually two or three versions at 5, 6 and 7 days so you can weigh cost against comfort before committing.
  • Vehicle and driver are locked once you choose. If you want, we suggest accommodation in Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende or Moni; you book direct.
  • A deposit secures the dates. Around July–August and the year-end holidays availability tightens noticeably, so earlier is genuinely better.
  • Pickup at your hotel or Komodo Airport (LBJ), then the same driver stays with you all the way east.

If you are still choosing between a boat-based Komodo itinerary and the overland route, our Flores overland package page compares the common multi-day routings side by side.

How much does Labuan Bajo to Maumere cost?

Every figure below is an indicative USD estimate for planning only, current as of 2026 and subject to fuel prices, season, road conditions and final vehicle allocation. Your firm quote arrives by WhatsApp or email once we have your dates.

Configuration Indicative per day Indicative 5-day traverse
MPV, up to 4–5 passengers from ~USD 95–130 from ~USD 550–750
SUV / high clearance, 4 passengers from ~USD 120–165 from ~USD 700–950
Minibus, 8–14 passengers from ~USD 150–210 from ~USD 850–1,200

These ranges cover driver, fuel and the one-way return of the vehicle. They exclude hotels, meals, Kelimutu National Park entry and guide fees. We do not publish a fixed rate card for this route, because a 5-day traverse for a couple and a 7-day traverse for a family of six are not the same job. For shorter, more standardised movements around town, see the car hire price list.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run the route in reverse, Maumere to Labuan Bajo?

Yes, and many travellers do. Flying into Maumere and driving west means you finish in Labuan Bajo, ready for a Komodo boat trip. The stages are identical, the pricing logic is the same, and repositioning simply applies in the opposite direction.

What flights leave from Maumere?

Frans Seda Airport (MOF) is a small regional airport served by domestic carriers connecting mainly toward Denpasar and Kupang, with schedules that shift seasonally and can change at short notice. Confirm your flight directly with the airline before we fix the final driving day, and consider a buffer night in Maumere if an international connection follows.

Is one driver enough for six days of mountain roads?

For a normal 5–7 day plan with sensible daily stages, yes — our drivers work this corridor regularly and rest overnight at each stop. If you want to compress the route into fewer days, or want very early starts on consecutive mornings, tell us up front and we will price a second driver rather than push one person past safe hours.

Can I add a night of diving or a beach day in Maumere?

Certainly, and it is a common finish. Flag it at the planning stage so the last leg from Moni arrives early enough. Retaining the car for local runs around Maumere afterwards is quoted as an add-on day. For logistics on the western end — late arrivals, early boat departures — see our airport car hire service.
