What is included in Flores overland car hire, as of 2026, is the vehicle itself, a professional driver, fuel for the agreed route, parking and road fees along the way, and — on multi-day itineraries — the driver’s own meals and accommodation. What is not included is anything that carries a separate ticket: national park entry, village contributions, your own hotel rooms, and the local trek guides required at places like Wae Rebo. This page is the line-item breakdown we work from when a USD quote is issued, so you can read the number honestly before you commit.
Overland Flores is a different animal from a town transfer. A single day can cover mountain switchbacks, unsealed shoulders, market-day congestion in Ruteng and long stretches without a fuel station. Pricing that leaves half the cost structure unstated tends to reappear later as “extras”. We would rather show the whole list first.
What is included in Flores overland car hire as standard?
Every overland quote we issue covers the following, unless your written confirmation says otherwise:
- The vehicle — typically a high-clearance SUV for two to four passengers, or a Toyota HiAce for larger groups and luggage-heavy itineraries. Vehicle class is stated on the quote, not left vague.
- The driver — chauffeured operation is the norm across Flores, not an upsell. Self-drive is genuinely uncommon here, and for good reason: road conditions, informal traffic customs and limited recovery options make a local driver the practical choice.
- Fuel for the agreed route, including reasonable detours. Long unplanned deviations are re-quoted rather than absorbed silently.
- Parking, ferry vehicle fees and road contributions collected along the way for the car itself.
- Driver meals and accommodation on any itinerary of two days or more. You are not asked to buy your driver dinner or find him a room at each overnight stop.
- Airport meeting at Komodo Airport (LBJ) or hotel pickup within the agreed start point, with waiting time built in for the usual flight slippage.
- Drinking water on board, and route planning before departure — realistic driving hours, sensible overnight towns, and honest advice on what does not fit in the days you have.

What sits outside the quote?
The exclusions are deliberately specific. Vague exclusion lists are where budgets get damaged.

Tipping is discretionary and never invoiced. If a driver has handled a hard two-day mountain run well, guests often thank him directly, but nothing in our pricing assumes it.
How does the one-way drop fee work?
This is the single line item that confuses most first-time overland travellers, so it is worth stating plainly. A classic Flores route runs one way — for example ending in Bajawa, Ende or Maumere — while the vehicle and driver are based in the west. The car does not teleport home. Someone drives it back, empty, over one to two additional days, paying fuel, ferry or road fees and overnight costs on the way.
The one-way drop fee covers that repositioning. It is not a surcharge invented at checkout; it is the real cost of the unpaid return leg. Three things follow from that:
- The further east you finish, the higher the drop fee, because the return distance is longer.
- A round-trip itinerary that returns to the west has no drop fee at all — sometimes worth restructuring for.
- The fee is quoted as a separate line on your USD quote, never buried in the daily rate, so you can compare like with like.

Does the vehicle type change what is included?
Yes, in one important respect: range and terrain suitability. As of 2026 we operate electric vehicles including the Toyota bZ4X and the Wuling Air EV, and we are direct about their limits. Charging infrastructure across Flores is still thin outside the main town, and an overland route crossing the interior is not a job an EV should be asked to do today. Our EVs are offered for town-based and short-radius use, where they are quiet, clean and genuinely pleasant — not for multi-day interior crossings.
For overland work the honest answer remains a diesel or petrol SUV, or a HiAce for groups. Fuel is included either way; what changes is whether the route is physically viable. We would rather turn down an EV overland request than strand guests on a mountain road at dusk.
What about the June to September window?
Fleet availability tightens sharply in peak season. Suitable overland vehicles with experienced interior-route drivers are a finite pool, and by mid-year the good combinations are committed early. Quotes issued in this window are valid for a short confirmation period for that reason — not as a pressure tactic, but because we cannot hold a vehicle we do not have. Booking several weeks ahead is the practical fix.
Why are quotes issued in USD, and how firm are they?
Prices are quoted in USD because that is what most international guests budget in, and they are quote-based rather than fixed-menu because Flores routes are genuinely bespoke: distance, overnight towns, group size, luggage volume and drop point all move the number. All figures are indicative until confirmed in writing. Exchange movement, fuel price changes and third-party fees set by authorities can shift a quote issued weeks earlier, and we will say so rather than quietly adjust the inclusions.
What does not move is the inclusion list. Vehicle, driver, fuel, parking, driver meals and driver accommodation on multi-day trips are in. Entry fees, village levies, your hotels and trek guides are out.
